As CEO and Board Chair, we must make tough decisions almost every day, even if it is not always easy to face the reality that drives those decisions. But this is part of the territory and we accept the inevitable challenges of our jobs.

It is more difficult for us to accept the reality, the everyday truths, our patients and families live every day – the kinds of truths that don't come with a parent's job description. Yet they somehow find the strength to advocate for their children's health and the courage to hope for a better tomorrow.

They are what get us up every day. We come to work inspired to enable our talented staff to care for those brave patients and parents, and to ensure we will always have the room and resources to care for them.

All of us at Children's Hospital Colorado, from nurses to surgeons to nutritionists to accountants to cooks to researchers, work day-in and day-out with those patients and families at the core of everything we do. That is the truth – we work hard and we love what we get to do.

In the following pages, you'll see examples of the thousands of people here at Children's Colorado who focus their life's work on what's best for our children: There's Sarah Linton, the nurse who helps make the NICU feel more like home. And Dr. Fran Hickey, who has dramatically changed the lives of children with Down syndrome. Not to mention the thousands of staff who devote every caregiving moment to reducing preventable harm.

We've gathered some of the top stories from 2013, the truths that tell our story and bring us back to work every day. Please enjoy them, but don't stop there – gather your inspiration and help us improve our patients' lives.

Sincerely,

Jim Shmerling, D.H.A., FACHE
